Selecting a carpet:

Our experienced professionals will help you find absolutely the right style, color and quality to fit your needs. However if you would like to learn more we have provided this resource on carpet and questions to ask when you are buying carpet.

This big decision is made a lot easier once you know the basics about carpet. Over the many years of experience that Mr. Carpet has in the carpet and flooring business one of the biggest questions we get is “what style of carpet should I get?” Of course we’ll do our best to advise you during an in-home appointment but if you’d like to learn more yourself please read on.

The Basics

All carpet styles have one thing in common, they are all made of fibers that are cut, looped, or cut and looped. As you look at carpet you’ll see the styles fall into a few categories. One general rule you can use when deciding on your carpet is: the longer or higher the pile length the softer and richer feeling the carpet becomes.

A few of the styles

Berber:
Berber carpet is named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa . This handmade homespun look has been developed by commercial carpet manufactures into what we know as today’s Berber. These carpets use yarns that are flecked and are usually in loop style, whose loops sizes may very from very small to large

One of the most popular carpets, Berber carpet limits footprints and vacuum tracks. And because of their thicker yarns It offers very good durability and is easy to clean. Berber is also available in multi-level loop design, which offer patterns and different styles as well as many different colors.

Overall Berber style carpets wear very well and are excellent for high traffic areas such as a family room or a hallway.

Saxony:
When you think of plush carpet what you are probably thinking of is Saxony . Made from two or more fibers twisted together to form a yarn these yarns are then looped and clipped to form a nice dense tufted carpet.

One of the most widely used and selected carpets for residential use, the new generation of Saxony carpets resist stains and are less prone to traffic wear. These carpets have a solid carpet color that’s ideal for your traditional or formal rooms.

Because of their “plushness,” Saxony carpets do show every footprint and vacuum-cleaner mark. However there’s no substitute for the regal beauty that Saxony can bring to your home.

Frieze:
The Frieze (pronounced free-zay) carpet is great for those areas in your home in which you desire a rich look but need durability from high traffic. Made from short fibers that have been highly twisted, the Frieze carpet hides footprints and vacuum marks like a pro.

Because Frieze is made from short tight fibers, the surface takes on more of an individualized look and allows different Friezes to be made with varying densities. Available in a large variety of colors, you’ll notice not just the color of the carpet but the highlights and shadows created by the carpet’s surface.

Due to its trackless and crush resistant characteristics, the Frieze is also easily cleaned and is one of the most durable styles you can buy.

  Custom:
Custom carpet is just as the name implies, custom. Have a certain color you want to match, does your décor call for that retro color that just isn’t made anymore, than Custom carpet is for you. Typically more expensive than other types of carpet the Custom carpet gives you an infinite amount of flexibility in colors and styles.

  Commercial:
Don’t let the name fool you these carpets are not just found in the office or workplace anymore.
Commercial carpets have tight construction, typically with densely packed and tightly twisted tufts or woven loops. The combination of construction and colors give this carpet a proven durability in high traffic area. Perfect for the basement, workout room or any area where you desire carpet but may have high traffic and tough use.

Before signing on the dotted line:

Ask yourself if you like the product. A great price is only great if the carpet is what you want.

Make sure you’ve done your homework. Ask the sales person our checklist questions. If you are satisfied sign, if not don’t.

And don’t forget, always get a written estimate!
